Every September, candle lovers around the globe come together to celebrate candles. Candles create atmosphere, evoke memories, and offer moments of relaxation in our busy lives. From celebrations to quiet introspection, candles bring warmth into any space. To celebrate the importance candles have in our lives, NCA is celebrating Love the Glow as our theme for the month.
What Is World Candle Month?
Established by the National Candle Association (NCA) and celebrated annually in September, World Candle Month aims to:
• Celebrate the cultural and personal significance of candles
• Raise awareness about candle safety and care
• Inspire people to incorporate candles into everyday wellness and lifestyle moments
It’s time to reflect on how something so simple, how a flicker of light, can transform a room, evoke emotion, and create a sense of calm and beauty.
Why It Matters
Candles offer more than just fragrance or ambiance. They help us set moods, mark celebrations, remember loved ones, and create moments of pause in a fast-paced world. Especially during times of transition or stress, lighting a candle can be a form of grounding and intentional living.
But with that comfort comes responsibility. Like any open flame, candles require care, attention, and knowledge to use safely. That’s why World Candle Month encourages a four-step guide to mindful candle use: Look, Learn, Light, and Enjoy.
How to Celebrate World Candle Month the Right Way: Look. Learn. Light. Enjoy.
1. LOOK Before You Light
Before you light your favorite candle, take a moment to inspect it.
• Trim the wick to ¼ inch to prevent soot and uneven burning.
• Make sure the candle is placed on a heat-resistant surface.
• Keep it away from flammable objects, children, and pets.
• Avoid drafts that can cause uneven burning or flickering flames.
2. LEARN About Candle Safety and Ingredients
Being an informed candle consumer means you’ll get more enjoyment and less risk from your candle rituals.
• Learn the difference between paraffin, soy, coconut, and beeswax blends and choose what aligns with your needs.
• Understand fragrance strength and burn time so you can select the right candle for the right space.
• Take time to read manufacturer labels for burning instructions and safety tips.
3. LIGHT with Purpose
Lighting a candle is more than creating light—it’s an invitation to slow down, reflect, or celebrate.
• Light a candle during your morning routine to set intentions for the day.
• Use it to mark the start of a cozy evening, a self-care ritual, or dinner with loved ones.
• Try lighting candles that reflect your mood with seasonal or meaningful scents.
4. ENJOY the Moment Safely
Candles are meant to be enjoyed—but always with care.
• Never leave a burning candle unattended.
• Extinguish it after 3–4 hours to prevent container overheating.
• Store candles in a cool, dry place and keep lids on to preserve scent between uses.
